When packing light, make your list as specific as possible and tailored to you!
Cash (If I am only traveling with cash, I separate it in my fanny pack, backpack and suitcase)
Driver's License
Debit Card (don't forget to set your travel alert)
Passport (depending where I am traveling, I may keep this with me the whole time)
Vaccine Card (if required)
Insurance Cards
Chapstick
Eye drops
Hand Sanitizer
Pen
Small tube of medicine
Epi-pens
Mints
Feminine hygiene products
Phone
Backpack: Depending on how much I need to pack, I flip between these two bags: Patagonia Black Hole 32L Travel Pack and Osprey Skimmer 16 Hydration Pack (typically without the hydration pack inside)
Phone and chargers
Photocopy of all documents, printed in color
Water bottle- I live by the LifeStraw filter.
Book/magazine
Small tissue pack
All necessary medicine and list of prescriptions (your pharmacist can print it for you) original bottles are best* You must keep this with you in case your carry-on has to be checked and it gets lost*
Neck pillow
Eye Mask
Earplugs (your friends may snore!)
Universal adapter (even if the country uses the same outlets as us, this is great for all uses, if something trips, it will not hurt your device and it has multiple chargers)
Digital watch (better than a smart watch when traveling)
AirPods/Headphones
Deodorant
Long sleeve/sweatshirt
Full change of clothes
*Sometimes I keep my toiletry bag in here too*
In your carry-on bag: I use any light-weight shell- TJMaxx always has great options. I like bags with a hardshell front zip for laptops.
Toiletry Bag:
Feminine hygiene products
Body Wash
Shampoo
Hair Gel
Face Wash
Face Lotion/sunscreen
Sunscreen
Bug spray (with DEET if possible and non airsol, just the regular pump spray) (Stay away from 100% DEET it can burn you!)
Hairbrush
Make up (if you like)
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Deodorant
Razor
Loofa
Baby Wipes
Q-tips
Tweezers
Hair ties, etc.
Minimal Jewelry- don’t bring your best stuff!
Personal First Aid Kit (meds you know you can take: Excedrin Migraine, Dramamine, Allergy Meds, Sea bands, Pepto, Tums, etc.) Dry Bag or ziplock bags (for swimsuit)
Clothes:
Bathing Suit
PJs
Bra/Underwear/socks (Always bring extra!)
Clothing- all depends on the length and type of the trip. I follow a simple guide, one travel outfit, one outfit per day, one comfy outfit and one fancy outfit. Rewearing and mix and match pieces are best.
Here are my three favorite staple pieces, you can wear them many days in a row and don't smell! Trust me. Columbia Women's Freezer PFG Dress, Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily Graphic T-Shirt, and yes, another Patagonia item, Nano Puff Jacket, but I have had my jacket for 5 years and it is the only jacket I ever wear. I also wash it all the time and it looks brand new.
Walking sandals- Chacos or tevas are always my favorites
Tennis shoes or hiking boots- Columbia Newton Ridge Plus Waterproof Hiking Boot is my favorite light-weight and comfy boot.
Flip Flops- Hoka slides have been a recent love of mine!
Socks
Headlamp/little flashlight
Binoculars (depending on your trip)
Bandanas (I always have one with me while traveling- sweat, spills, emergency tissue, bad hair day, etc)
Hat
Rain Jacket or packable poncho- Make sure your rain jacket is weather appropriate. Columbia Switchback III is my favorite light weight one that doesn't stick to you when its hot and muggy. I recommend getting a size up- it helps with the sticking and then you can wear it over warmer jackets if needed.
